Ohio has a puppy mill problem
Even though Ohio recently passed one of the most significant advancements in standards of care in the country, there is more work to do. Estimates regarding the number of puppy mills in Ohio vary, but what’s known for sure is that Ohio has a puppy mill problem.
See Ohio Laws for information about the current laws in Ohio.
Despite the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) making it almost impossible to know if you’re buying from a responsible breeder, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) continues to research and track breeders as best they can and this picture isn’t pretty for Ohio. The 2018 Horrible Hundred report indicates that Ohio has 13 of the worst breeders and the second most puppy mills in the country.
And, the latest from Bailing Out Benji indicates that Ohio has 35 breeders in operation that have been on the Horrible Hundred list at some point in time.
Reinforcing the reports, News 5 Cleveland’s Tara Molina provided a report in November of 2018 on the puppy mill problem in the State of Ohio.
What can you do to help?
There are many ways to help put end to puppy mills and it’s going to take all of us to make sure people are aware puppy mills and make informed decisions when adding a dog to their family.
